The lexicon contains approximately 12,000 words and usages of standard language with nationally- or regionally-limited distribution, or differences in usage including their standard German equivalents. The lexicon is based on the analysis of an extensive corpus from all countries and states in which German is the national or regional official language, with an analysis of the language of the Internet as an additional data source.
