Over the past 10 years, the number of students enrolled in individual higher-education courses has risen dramatically. Consequently, new challenges are having to be met: course design and teaching methods must be modified if quality is to be maintained.;The editors of this stimulating collection have concentrated on case-study accounts by practising lecturers in universities and polytechnics who have significantly changed the delivery of their courses to accommodate the increased student-to-staff ratios that now prevail.
