Although this is fiction it is based on the author's experience as a minor diplomat in Istanbul in the 1930s and he writes most evocatively and beautifully about the place. The story is a simple romance set against this backdrop with a few political Ottoman twists also based on fact. The heroine of the story is based on the author's future wife, Vita Sackville West.
