In it he looks at the development of roads through time, though focusing largely on the Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods, and their function in facilitating the movement of people, animals, agricultural produce and other goods, and the military. Based on documentary evidence, maps and fieldwork observations, this is a good guide to understanding the development of the roads and tracks that criss-cross Britain.
