Reencounter presents the fascinating body of work of Sheila Hicks (B. Nebraska 1934, lives and works in France) produced from 1957 to the present. The groundbreaking artist who uses textiles and fiber as her métier, returns to Chile after fifty years presenting more than fifty artworks on display along with a selection of Pre-Columbian pieces from the holdings of the Museo Pre-Columbian, some of which have never been exhibited to the public. "Sheila Hicks was already an artist and photographer when at the end of the 1950s, travelling in South America, she fell in love with the fabrics of the Andean people and the inhabitants of southern Chile. She felt a particular affinity for the excellence and skill seen in pre-Columbian textiles, and decided that her future artistic career would focus on textile art. The teachings of George Kubler and Junius Bird on the semantics and technology of pre-Columbian textiles helped her to confirm her new vocation. That is why in this exhibition, Hicks' work is presented alongside fabrics from our collection of pre-Columbian textiles, as they illustrate this influence in her art" --Page 20.
