Pakistan's prisons held over 3700 children at the end of 1997. About 90 percent of them were awaiting the conclusion of their trials, a process that can take months or even years. While their trials are pending, children languish in overcrowded, often harsh detention facilities that offer few educational or recreational opportunities. The prison conditions compound a pattern of abuse that begins at the moment of arrest.
