Although batching often appears more efficient than one piece flow for an individual task, the practice creates waste for other parts of the organization that more than offset the perceived benefits. This book argues the case for one piece flow over batching by identifying the eight root causes of batching, identifies some of the wastes created from batching, and describes the advantages of one piece flow. Case studies illustrate ways to channel current mindsets toward batching as the preferred operation.
