"The last few decades have brought major changes in our views of the size, age, and constitution of the universe. These changes are driven by our ever-broader access to the electromagnetic spectrum as well as to the other 'messengers' of modern astrophysics: gravitational waves, neutrinos, and cosmic rays. Outside of the Solar System celestial objects are at distances so vast that the only way we can gain information is through these messengers, which signal energy release throughout the universe. Our view of the physical reality of the Universe now derives from the integration of multiple messengers which, taken together, give us a far deeper understanding of the universe than any one by itself. This book focuses on examples of multi-wavelength and multimessenger studies that represent exciting areas of modern astrophysical research, topics such as colliding black holes and neutron stars, the discovery of planetary systems around stars other than our own, and the determination of the Hubble constant that provides the basic size and age scales of the universe.
