This user's guide to English grammar and style presents the historical background of old rules, many of which are shown to be unsound. In their place, the reader is offered a set of principles for speaking and writing good English. Where there is divided usage, grounds are given for preferring one to another. The book deals with the many misuses of present-day English, and there are two supplements containing examples of bad English, with comments and suggested improvements. A guide to punctuation and a glossary of basic grammatical terms are also included.
