In this penetrating new study of Paradise Lost Peter Davies vividly demonstrates the conflict between Milton the theologian and Milton the poet. He shows that this tension works against Milton's determination to justify the ways of God to men, but that it enriches his epic and reveals the apparently austere moralist as having a compassionate - and at times unashamedly sensuous - vision of humanity.
