Contributors to the book consider pertinent and at times controversial issues such as; the increasingly restrictive immigration policies across Europe; whether immigration erodes the national welfare state; how asylum seekers are systematically excluded from the welfare system; whether new immigrants are perceived as undeserving of welfare state benefits; whether new migration within the EU undermines national welfare states. Issues are addressed which are central to current social and political debates regarding European immigration policies, welfare state restructuring and European integration. It also looks at the implications of such debates for immigrant and immigrant-origin communities across Europe.
