Plymouth is the third largest city in southern England, with a population of almost 250,000. This major port and naval centre was heavily bombed during the Second World War, and much of its centre was destroyed. Reconstruction during the 1950s resulted in the first pedestrianised city centre in England, although the historic Old Barbican district survived; its sixteenth-century streets are a major tourist attraction. Tom Bowden's long-awaited new book includes suburban areas as well as the city centre, districts such as Turnchapel, Crownhill, Compton St Budeaux and Ford, and also features the Dockyard at Devonport. It will be a trip down memory lane for anyone who remembers Plymouth in the old days.
