Railways were built in many parts of Britain during the 'Railway Mania' of the 1830s and 1840s and Hampshire was no different, particularly as developers were keen to create links between London and the south coast and the Isle of Wight. The railways in the county ranged from small country branch lines such as the Salisbury & Dorset Junction Railway and the Hayling Island branch line, to main lines such as the London to Southampton railway. There were also two military railways and over 25 miles of lines situated behind the walls of Portsmouth Docks.
