"The world population has been consistently raising, inducing an increase in the consumption of the most diverse products, which creates enormous pressure on the industry, which has to develop to meet the demand. However, this situation usually leads to more pollution, consumption of natural resources, and is not always accompanied by studies that allow an increase in social sustainability. Automation has been abundantly used to increase the economic component of sustainability, significantly improving the competitiveness of numerous products. However, automation can assume an extremely relevant role in the improvement of sustainability in the environmental and social components. This book intends to highlight mainly these components of sustainability, without forgetting that the economic component has to be maintained or increased. The reduction in the consumption of natural resources, with particular emphasis on energy consumption, is one of the components that can be improved through automation. However, there are many other aspects where automation can lead to the replacement of equipment or processes, and even induce changes in product definition, helping to reduce the environmental impact of industrial processes used in the manufacture of numerous products. Trying to make it even clearer how automation can contribute to improving sustainability in our daily lives, a chapter is also included describing how automation can be used in our homes to optimize the impact of our well-being on the environment, creating a cycle that allows us to realize that our well-being also depends on all of us, and that we can use automation as a valuable tool to that end"--
