The major source of Latin American history, this set covers the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries of America south of the United States and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean island nations, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and by convention, Haiti. Volumes 1-5 cover the period from the first contacts between Native Americans and Europeans in the late fifteenth century to 1930. Volumes 6-10 cover the history of Latin America since 1930 by topic and by area. Volume II contains bibliographic essays. Entries are long essays with maps. A planned three-volume related set will cover the history of the Native peoples of the Americas: North, Middle, and South. Volumes can be purchased separately.
