Wall-paintings dating from the 11th to 15th centuries have survived in only around twenty churches on Crete. This volume contains a thorough investigation of the style and iconography of the paintings in each church. Spatharakis demonstrates how the paintings that were produced when the island was under Venetian occupation, are unique amongst Byzantine art. He also discusses the influence of Western Christendom on the iconography.Table of ContentsPreface;Introduction; The Churches: Agia Trias, Agia Trias;Agios Georgios, St. George;Agios Konstantinos (Artos), St. George;Argyroupolis, St. Kyriake, St. Nicholas, Panagia;Arkadi, St. Paraskevi;Chromonastiri, St. Eutychios, Panagia Kera;Kato Poros, St. John the Evangelist;Kato Valsamonero, St. John the Evangelist;Mountros, St. Nicholas;Myriokephala, Panagia;Pigi, St. Nicholas;Prasses, Panagia;Roustika, Panagia and Soter;Saitoures, Panagia;Selli, St. John the Evangelist;Zouridi, Soter; Conclusions;Indices;List of Illustrations;Plates.
