Architecture is often seen as the art of a thinking mind that arranges, organises and establishes relationships between the parts and the whole. It is also seen as the art of designing spaces, which we experience through movement and use. Conceptual ordering, spatial and social narrative are fundamental to the ways in which buildings are shaped, used and perceived. Architecture and Narrative explores the ways in which these three dimensions interact in the design and life of buildings. The act of perceiving is linked with the sequential unfolding of vision as our bodies pass through the space. However, it is also linked with conceptual patterns like symmetry, regularity and rhythm, that connect the individual points along the sequence into a coherent whole. These patterns are established by an all-knowing, all-seeing 'narrator', the architect, as an armature to the unfolding framework of space. This spatial narrative unfolds as a succession of temporal moments. The notion of time is at the centre of the difference between what our eyes see through motion and what our minds grasp as abstract patterns. on top of this, architecture constructs social narratives, related to the cultural and ideological content of buildings. Examining these three notions, of perceptual, temporal and social experiences, this intriguing book will be of interest to anyone with an interest in the theory of architecture and architecture's relationship to the cultural human environment.
