This novel marks the end of postwar resignation and the beginning of a new era in German literature. Its technique is at once satire and a settling of accounts with the cultural and historical megalomania that culminates in Nazism. Everything in this novel is original, not because the author gratuitously sought novelty but because it was necessary to reinvent language and narrative to describe the newly invented horrors.
