This is a critical overview of the notions of high-level second language proficiency and exceptionality. The chapters do not simply focus particularly on presenting empirical research results, but rather provide an up-to-date theoretical understanding of the issues involved, and describe the body of knowledge that has been attained today. In addition, they discuss research methodologies and identify information gaps in their particular areas.
