It gives a rational account of the development of the values and meanings of words in Tibetan, and distinguishes precisely the various transitions in periods of literature and varieties of dialect, illustrating each step by the use of copious illustrations and examples. It will therefore be useful to the comparative philologist as well as to the student of the Tibetan language. The book includes an introduction dealing with the Tibetan alphabet and with the pronunciation of the Tibetan language. There is also a phonetic table for comparing the different dialects, and an English-Tibetan vocabulary.
