This book traces the involvement of women in housing management from 1912 to the present day. Marion Brion shows how the levels of participation fluctuated during this period and looks at factors which have helped or hindered women's involvement in housing. These include changes in policy and practice, strategies of organisation and patterns of employment. A range of techniques, including unique oral sources as well as unpublished documentary material, are used to unveil a previously little researched area.Throughout, the issues which emerge are related back to the modern context. The separatism which developed in the shape of the Society of Women Housing Managers early this century is compared with the more diverse organisational forms used to support women during the 1980s.
