States and Sovereignty in the Global Economy challenges several points of "conventional wisdom", including the extent to which globalization is truly new, the claim that there is an inevitable decline of the state, and the argument that the global economy dictates a common fate for all states. Rather than emphasizing state sovereignty and globalization as opposing forces, this volume reveals that certain powerful states have played a pivotal role in the creation of institutions of conmtemporary global capitalism. Anti-state popular images - which stress the need to reduce state spending and cut social welfare - have strong ideological roots but distort historical and contemporary reality. Overall, the chapters in this collection highlight that how states matter depends upon their differeing roles in the global economy and geopolitical system, distinct history, varying resource bases and the nature of thier domestic class relations. Globalization and the role of the state are issues at the forefront of contemporary debates: this volume presents an unconventional and radical perspective which reveals that states do still matter despite the vigour of international capital flows and the omnipresence of the global market.
