La desinformación ha sido una herramienta de política exterior arraigada en el gobierno ruso desde los tiempos zaristas hasta el actual régimen de Vladímir Putin. En este contexto, los medios de comunicación RT y Sputnik han surgido como actores clave y han aprovechado los avances tecnológicos para difundir una narrativa alineada con los intereses del Kremlin. Estos dos medios han intensificado su presencia en español a través de las redes sociales para aumentar la influencia del Kremlin en América Latina e introducir la perspectiva rusa en el mundo hispanohablante. En este sentido, RT y Sputnik utilizan estrategias de soft y sharp power con el mero propósito de socavar la imagen de los países rivales de Moscú y posicionar así a Rusia como una fuerte aliada de la región latinoamericana, aprovechando, especialmente, situaciones de debilidad en Occidente como la pandemia de COVID- 19 o la guerra de Ucrania. La falta de regulación contra la desinformación y la simpatía de ciertos regímenes latinoamericanos hacia Putin han permitido que el Kremlin identifique a la población latinoamericana como un nuevo objetivo para llevar a cabo sus labores de desinformación. Esto presenta desafíos significativos a la hora de restringir y supervisar estas prácticas, lo cual resulta a su vez preocupante dado su gran potencial para distorsionar la opinión pública.Disinformation has been a longstanding tool of Russian foreign policy, dating back to the czarist era and continuing under the current regime of Vladimir Putin. In this context, the media outlets RT and Sputnik have emerged as key players, leveraging technological advancements in order to disseminate a narrative aligned with the Kremlin's interests. These outlets have intensified their presence in Spanish through social media platforms to enhance the Kremlin's influence in Latin America and introduce the Russian perspective to the Spanish-speaking world. In this regard, RT and Sputnik employ strategies of soft and sharp power with the sole purpose of undermining the image of Moscow's rival nations and positioning Russia as a strong ally of the Latin American region, particularly capitalizing on weaknesses in the West such as the COVID-19 pandemic or the war in Ukraine. The lack of regulation against disinformation and the sympathy of certain Latin American regimes towards Putin have allowed the Kremlin to identify the Latin American population as a new target for its disinformation efforts. This presents significant challenges in terms of restricting and monitoring these practices, which is concerning given their considerable potential to distort public opinion.
