Existen pocos estudios que se hayan preocupado de situar, con rigor y precisión, la importancia que tuvieron las sociedades y familias empresariales españolas que protagonizaron la iniciativa privada de la minería y la industria del plomo a lo largo del siglo XIX en el distrito Linares-La Carolina. Una de ellas fue la dinastía Figueroa, cuyo volumen inversor, societario y de negocio se hizo extensivo a sectores tan dinámicos y novedosos entonces como el gas, la electricidad, el laminado de aluminio y el ferrocarril.
