Dr. Jan Luijten (1932) a neurologist and psychiatrist by profession, was living in Bergen op Zoom during the Second World War. In this well-docu-mented and finely-illustrated book he describes the battles of the Canadian forces for the liberation of the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. He of-fers interesting new insights into the fighting and the decisions made by the Allied Commanders and their German counterparts. The fighting in this province created an emotional bond between Canada and Noord-Brabant which is still very much alive. The liberation by the Canadian forces was a central experience in the life of the author, and he studies in de-tail the eventes of those days. he has visited the sites of the battles and has travelled to Canada to interview war veterans. He also researched German sources which relate to the hostilities.
