Annales is the name given to a major school of Historical enquiry, after the journal Annales d'histoire economique et sociale founded in 1929 by Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre. This school of historiography has been one of the most celebrated, and yet criticised, of the Twentieth century. It represented a departure from the traditional narrative chronological history and the incorporation of other disciplines, particularly geography and social anthropology.This set selects essays on the school, their journal, their self-referentiality and their influence, focusing mainly on debates in a number of academic fields from the last three decades.
